Silberman’s book may be the first to document forced retention of bodily waste in public schools. The book documents that public schools’ “ban on movement” extends to children not even being allowed to use the toilet or get drinks of water with out permission, and the time spent going to the toilet is “rigidly prescribed”. He was possibly the first person to document that many public schools lock their toilets during classes. He also documents an incident of an elementary school principal limiting toilet breaks to three minutes (pages 131-134, 337).
