My twelve yr. old son just received a suspesion (all day), for using the restroom. His locker is directly accross the hall from the restroom, and he had a locker pass, so after he was finished at his locker he quickly went into the restroom, as he stated he just couldn't hold it any longer. When I learned he was being punished for this, I went to the school and spoke with the Asst. Principal, and she was very anoyed with us for my refusing to allow my son be in ISS all day when that is not a behavioral issue, nor a reason to be punished. She demanded that he do it anyway, and I said absolutely not, that if thats the case he will go home with me. Now it is a truant day as I took him out of school, and they marked it as OSS. What can be done about this. RRH

i'm not writing as a parent but as a student (now in college) who formerly attended a high school who practiced these kinds of restroom "rules". As a result of having to "hold it" all day (there was never enough time between classes or at lunch if you wanted time to eat) for approx. 6 years of middle and high school, i now have problems with a weak bladder and am sometimes unable to hold it at all. I also subconsiously will wait until I am almost bursting until I will use the restroom. I honestly feel that I am damaged from this experience. Furthermore, I am studying to become a teacher and WILL NOT be practicing this kind of bathroom scheduling in my classroom.

Laurie: Your website is awesome. How can people volunteer to advocacy work in our own states? Children's voice's need to be heard. I am an educator myself, and would never treat any child the way some teachers do. I have actually heard some make statements like"If you take up my time, I'm taking yours" meaning if they ask for bathroom time during class time, they miss recess or have to give up something. How ridiculous. Your site certainly opened my eyes and clued me in on answers to a lot of questions I have had. I have shared your info with other parents. Thanks

I have a nine year old daughter who recently was denied bathroom privleges.I did not understand in the begining of the year why her stomach would hurt her and she would not use the bathroom as normal.I had to take her into the doctor because the cramps were so bad. When I did this they took a exray and she was full of bile all the way up, she was given laxatives for 60 days and told she must use the bathroom, well this is when the bomb dropped and she told me they can only go twice a day and she did not want to get in trouble because she would have to stand in the corner. This is what the teacher does when you make her angry.NOW I dont know about anyone else, but where do the teachers get off telling these children no?I am disgusted with this I am hurt that my daughter did not want me to say anything because she was in fear of standing in the corner which by the way it is illegal but she said if she says anything,
her teacher says "you children are pissing me off mmm I said it I run this mug tell your mommies and daddies that" AND SHE IS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN??I am appauled needless to say she will not be going there anymore as of today. If we dont stand up for are children and what is right who will??

I am looking for support from other parents in other areas of the country. I am seeking to abolish corporal punishment in first in our county schools, and hopefully in the State of North Carolina. I have just found out that in our county, Union County, that disabled students are victims of corporal punishment, in fact, this county hit the highest number of disabled students in the entire state according to the last survey by the Office of Civil Rights.
We are the only industrialized nation in the world, with the exception of a small part of Canada, that still allows our children to be hit in schools. It is still legal in 22 of the 50 United States.
This sickens me to think that any child is being hit, but come on, disabled children?

My child was made to clean toilets with her hands. She and 3 other little 8 year old girls, were forced to clean the girls and boys urinals with their hands, no brush! No Sponge. They were allowed to use the janitors huge gloves, that filled with water and and what urine. The teacher then decided to take pictures of this. The school she attends, has tested her for ADHD the tests they took say that she is ADHD. I did not put her on medicane, maybe I should have. I know she is a hand full but she makes great grades and she is my child. No Child should clean nasty toilets and boys urinals.

I was wondering if anyone had information regarding public toilet use in NC. I know that right now there is an NC ammendment in the building code for public toilet use in restaraunts because I contacted the Building Inspector. I was told that "in the near future" - meaning anywhere between 2006 & 2009 - this will extend to all public buildings. I live in Jacksonville, NC and recently had an experience in a thrift store in which they tried to tell me their restroom was "out of order" when I asked if my 4 year old daughter could use their facilities. I found another employee and asked again and she begrudgingly agreed. When my daughter finished and we exited the restroom, I was reprimanded for asking this employee when another already told me no. (She did not tell me no, she said it was "out of order".) This same employee was upset and stated I gave her a "song and dance". We then engaged in a shouting match in the store and I ended up storming out of the store never to return. I was told by my mother-in-law, who followed me out, that another employee told me, as I went out the door, "Well isn't that tough." This happened right after Thanksgiving and I sent a letter to this store explaing what happened, why I will not return and who I plan on contacting. I have yet to receive a response. It angers me that these people want to get mad at me for trying to attend to my daughter's NEEDS. This is not the first time I have encountered this type of situation where I've had to beg of a business to let my child us the bathroom. I don't ask for myself, I ask for my child.

Hello Ms. Myers,
Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding restrooms in school facilities. Currently, both the Department of Health (DOH), through local county health departments, and the Department of Education (DOE), through the local school boards, conduct inspections at school facility restrooms for sanitation and hygiene standards. The DOH inspects all school facilities using Chapter 64E-13 of the Florida Administrative Code (FAC). A copy of the code can be obtained at http://fac.dos.state.fl.us/. Additionally, you can review the departments information regarding inspections at school facilities at http://www.doh.state.fl.us/environment/facility/group/sch.htm. If you observe a school facility in the state of Florida having restrooms which are inaccessible to students, not having required supplies (such as toilet paper, hand towels, soap, etc..), or any other violation under 64E-13, please feel free to make a complaint to the local health department in that county for investigation. The local health department will investigate any complaint related to 64E-13, FAC, standards. The complaint can be anonymous if preferred by the complaintent. MY LETTER TO U.S Dept of Health and human services>locked
bathrooms
Sept 6, 04
Dear Mr. Thompson:
School bathrooms are sub-par in terms of safety, sanitation (lack of soap, toilet tissues, and damaged toilets) and recently there has been a lockdown of bathrooms. Ill children are protected under HIPAA as well as the Disability Act and have a right to have accessible bathrooms at all times. Health risks of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and urinary tract infections increase with improper sanitation. President George W. Bush wants to leave "No Child Left Behind", however you are neglecting their behinds while in the restrooms. My alma mater, Hand Middle School located in Lancaster, PA locked down their restrooms (last spring) for more than three hours per day due to a rash of vandalism. The teachers did not have any keys and only three escorts were available for approximately 600 students. The students had to wait 20 minutes or more to use the restroom. Apparently one child had an "accident" while waiting. Mr Thompson, I want all school restrooms under the umbrella of the US Department of Health and Human Services to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our greatest assets, the children. Adult

this is all with the positive agenda in this world, unlike goeorge w bush with his negetive agenda ,particularly regarding the teacher protection act.Teachers should have absolutly no right to practic corperal punishment on students espectualy when the family of the pupal disagrees. This is suposed to be a country of freedom of choice and a peacfull way of life, not a country of exploiting the poor the week the CHILDREN,
We need to follow Jorden Riaks example and teach ,how to raise children gently by showing children how to act good by being good adults and not resorting to violence.
teachers who paddle students belong in prison,,espetually those who do it againsts the best wishes of the parents,

We are a Dutch/American website on alternative learning. In The Netherlands home education is hardly possible, although we are in great need of positive alternatives to mainstream schools. We have linked to your website, as we would like to stress that young people have the right to be educated as they wish and many, many more rights that we all should be aware of. Thank you for all your work and cooperation.

I just wanted to thank you for all of the information on your web site. I have been battling my daughter's schools for the past 5 years. After 5 years, I'm tired of trying to reason with the schools and their policies in our district, and am going to do what I can to try to force them to change their policies. I don't think that people realize that this is happening to their kids at school, until like me, their child ends up sick because they cannot use the restroom as needed.
I'm going to do what I can to make parents in our school district aware, and try to get them to join in my effort to change policy. I've had to get a doctor's excuse every year, just so they will let her go to the restroom, and that's ridiculous. Again, thank you for all of your information, it's been great to know that I'm not the only one dealing with this!

My daughter is a 9th grade student at Weddington High School in Union County, NC.
Bathroom use is a major issue for certain teachers, one of them being Ms.__________. She is very restrictive with bathroom use. The students receive 3 passes for the 18 week semester. Any bathroom use after the three passes is not denied, but bathroom use results in an after school detention. This detention time is called a "working detention." A student will use this time to clean this teacher's room. The teacher teaches home economic type classes, so the punishment will consist of cleaning out this teacher's oven, scrubbing dishes, etc. One student in my daughter's class, who was out of passes for the semester, was given a pass from another student to avoid detention. The desperate student has very heavy menstrual cycles and bladder problems. It is mind boggling that this teacher is able to issue detentions to students for simply going to the bathroom. Where is the common sense or reason in this school? Oh, and PS, for each remaining unused bathroom pass at the end of the semester, one point gets added to the grade average. A student can actually add three points to his or her grade for NOT going to the bathroom. I fail to see the relationship between academic success and the retention of bodily waste.

I am a parent of a daughter who has spent the evening drinking 8 glasses of water to make up for not drinking during the day. Her rationale? She does not want to drink water at school and be refused bathroom use. I am appalled that any teacher would add points to a child's grade for not using bathroom passes. This is a big problem and needs to be looked into. Maybe someone out there reading this in the Union County area can do this, I can't. My child is in the same school as the girl who had her period. I am afraid to tell my name,my daughter will be the one to pay the price. I see it all the time. My daughter tells me that there are children who only get so many passes per class, then if they are gone, then get detention for going to the bathroom.
I support this parent going public. I hope you can fix this.

This website has been a wonderful resource for me regarding my daughter not being allowed the basic human right of toileting. I have copied & pasted much information from this web site and forwarded it to the numerous parents I have received phone calls from (after an article was printed in our local newspaper) whose children also have been denied this basic human right at this same school. One mother told me her daughter came home covered in blood, she had worn a sweatshirt tied around her waist (to cover the blood on the back of her jeans) after a teacher refused to allow her to leave class to go to the bathroom. Another parent told me her son was told by this same teacher to “pee on the floor, he would be the one cleaning it up”. Many parents have made their way around this issue by having their Physician write a note to allow the student to always be allowed to leave the room to use the bathroom. This has worked well but is not the solution. Parents are astonished as to the amount of information I have been able to provide them (thanks to this web site!) The response from ‘going public’ with the news article has been only positive to my daughter (from students & teachers). She has been interviewed for her ‘school newspaper article’ (published by the students) about this subject. 'Going Public' was a leap for our family to take, my daughter realizes how many other students she has helped and also that we as parents value her & her rights. One of the largest TV Stations in the Charlotte, NC area has requested the story. We have not made that decision yet but I truly believe the only way this issue will be addressed by parents, teachers & administrators is to be out in the public. The TV reporter who wants the story has her own story of not being allowed to 'toilet' when she was in high school. I have researched the surrounding school systems & local private schools. Some have a ‘sign-out’ system and some just allow the students to leave when necessary. They then, only address students who seem to be abusing the system. I am hopeful, based on the response from many of our School Board Members, that this issue will be addressed and a policy will be established. I am forever changed by this incident and will never stop advocating the rights of all children/students to never be denied this basic human right. Thanks for being such a great source of information!

I have been working in urology for many years as a nurse, but only recently with children. I have seen first hand what happens due to restrictions in school with regard to tolieting. My own children report poor conditions of the restrooms. In defense of the staff in schools, some of my patients have been teachers who themselves cannot leave classrooms to toilet because they have no one to watch the classroom. Most parents will never know that dysfunctional patterns are developing until there is a significant health change. Good tolieting needs to be included in ALL school systems, the teachers need to be instructed in normal patterns and taught to recognize dysfunction. Parents need to ask their children, REGARDLESS of age about their daily bladder and bowel habits. Children with these problems become adults with these problems. I am so excited I found this web site. Please keep up the good work, get the info out there!!! Happy bladders mean happy children. Thank you RN in NC

Why are only some letters published? Are only articles that support your exact views allowed? What about being an advocate for teaching children values and respect? Is that inappropriate?
Response from ChildAdvocate.org:
Regarding your question, there are many places on the Internet where teachers can go to justify their practice of violating children's basic human right to use the toilet when needed. This is not one of those places. This is a place where children and parents can come for support, education and assistance in getting children's needs met and rights respected. I felt that your post was inappropriate to these goals, and you hid behind anonymity, giving parents, children and me no opportunity to respond to you, so your post was removed. I welcome people to write me at my e-mail address if they have differences of opinion on any topics on ChildAdvocate.org and are able to express them in a way that is respectful towards children. When posts or e-mails are inappropriate, the writer will either not be answered or will be directed to educational pages such the http://www.childadvocate.org/1b_teacherarguement.htm or the http://www.childadvocate.org/1a_arguments.htm pages. Any posts that do not further the goals of raising awareness to the human rights of children will not be kept posted. Commercial and spam posts are also removed. Lastly, children learn values and respect by being shown respect by the adults in their lives. Forcing a child to wet or soil his or her pants, or sit in class in pain is not how to teach children values and respect- it is, however, a good way to teach children hatred, apathy for the pain of others, disrespect and the desire for revenge. - L.A.C.

This is truly a great site and gives parents information as to steps that can be taken to get public schools to improve their treatment of children. It is unfortunate that such a site has to exist, but parents are faced with these problems, as children have no rights in schools.

My 14 year old Freshman daughter has just been given 1 day of In-school suspension at Weddington High School (Union County - NC). She repeatedly asked a first year male teacher "please, please, let me know go to the bathroom". The teacher requested that she wait 10 minutes, she did, and then ask again. She was again told "no". She knew that she had started her period. She finally became so panicked that she told the teacher she had started her period and her parents would sue if was not allowed to leave. She then left the room knowing she was about to have blood all over her bare legs. They have suspended her for being disrespectful. This is a straight "A" student for the most part with an occasional "B" on her report card. She has never received an "N" in conduct and has never had any type of behavior issues. -We have appealed all the way to the county super. and he has ruled her suspension to be valid. Her cheer coach told her it did not matter if she was telling the truth, the administration would side with the faculty. She was right. My experience with this incident leaves me knowing our teachers/coaches/administration have no accountability. Does anyone have any advice on where I should go from here. Do I have legal recourse?

Beware of the mighty "Chaser" / Reinhart Kosak in Germany!
Since yesterday 21.10.04 a "Chaser", also known as Reinhart Kosak from Merzig-Wadern in the Saarland, Germany, the renown Co-Administrator of the East-German Websites www.imheim.de and www.jugendwerkhof.info, is publicly advertising on the Internet, that he personally has especially arranged for the "humbug page" - as he calls the Web site DiakonieFreistatt.de.vu @ www.geocities.com/martinidegrossi2003 operated by Martin Mitchell from Australia - to be shut down by Yahoo. The Web page that Reinhart Kosak proudly advertises having caused to be shut down was unmasking, and informing the public about, the truth of the perpetration of institutional child abuse, institutional child sexual abuse, and institutional child slave labour on children and youth of both sexes by the two official German state churches, in their institutions, in Germany. Reinhart Kosak further advises publicly on the Internet that he will do his utmost to also have the Webpage Heimkinder-Ueberlebende.org (Care-Leavers Survivors.org) @ www.heimkinder-ueberlebende.org also being operated by Martin Mitchell from Australia, which has the same contents and deals with the same topics as DiakonieFreistatt.de.vu @ www.geocities.com/martinidegrossi2003 to be shut down.

I have a 7 year old daughter who has what I call a horrid teacher. When school started she had a substitute who let her use the bathroom whenever. Since her regular teacher has been back, she has gotten severely constipated to where it is coming out on its own. I asked her when are you allowed to go to the bathroom and she told me only at lunch, snack time and recess. It is not allowed during class time. I am very frustrated because my daughter gets kidney infections and bladder infections if she gets constipated. She even sees a kidney specialist for this. I just don't understand why this is allowed to happen. My daughter is being put at risk for hospitalization for kidney infections. And that is not necessary for her to be denied going to the bathroom. It seems that even a medical condition has no importance at all. Even when it plays jeopardy with our kids lives. My daughter could end up with scarring in her kidneys. She had this same teacher last year so she is well aware of my daughters needs.

Thank you for putting up this web site dedicated to 'The Children'.
I had an unfortunate experience when I was in 3rd Grade with a hateful old substitute teacher who would not let me 'pee' when I had to go.. after several hours, I went.. in the chair, and my jeans - flooded my seat and the floor in front of me. I got to walk around in my soaked clothes for the rest of the day - I don't even remember getting to go 'clean up'..
Although this happened just over 40 years ago, the memory still is there and so are the scars.
I identify with children who are not allowed 'to go' when they need to, and I want to thank you for what you are doing to correct this problem in our schools.
Sincerely my Best Wishes to you, Laurie Couture!
Harold T
PS - Perhaps if the mean INCONSIDERATE 'teachers' who do these things could undergo a forced retention like they inflict on their students, they might have an understanding of the INHUMANE treatment they are putting on their students and also realize that they are NOT being any kind of a role model for these children.

I happened to write a Letter to the Editor informing my community that corporal punishment is being used in Union County, NC, and that for the first time since I have lived here, it is now in our student code of conduct. A TV reporter/producer sought to find me after reading the letter, and a google search led her to this site with one of my postings. I tell you all this for a couple of reasons. When you have issues with your school, and name the school or county, it gets out there in cyberspace. That could be a very good thing. Also, as a result of a google search on the topic of corporal punishment, two key individuals saw my letter to the editor and have been of invaluable help in guiding me to fight this.
Anyone interested in the topic of corporal punishment, please look to the following web sites. There are links to childadvocate.org on at least one of them.
www.nospank.net
www.stophitting.com
Jordan Riak is the founder of the nospank site, and has a wealth of data that he will ship to anyone seeking to abolish corporal punishment. Any of the data that you see on this site is available for distribution. Nadine Block is the director of the Center for Effective Discipline, and her site is full of valuable data. She has really stepped up to the plate by writing letters to my Union County Board of Ed members, and also had a letter to the editor in our local paper today.
I just want to let you all know that together we can do great things, and even though we are a scattered group, this site can unite us in some way. It has made a difference in my attempts at advocacy. One other side note, I was reading "The Purpose Driven Life" recently, sometimes seeking answers to my need to fight such issues. I was so glad to read that advocacy is one of the five main forms of worship. So we are doing the right thing for the right reasons. Thank you for this site and the support.

Teachers in this school are not letting children use the bathroom ! Teachers will only let children go to the bathroom when they feel like it!! Called the district superintendent and got no help was rude!! I am tired of school policy I think I will take my 3 children out of school and homeschool. I think I can give them a better education and they can go to the bathroom when needed!!!

Letter to US Dept. of Health and Human Services
Dear Mr. Thompson:
School bathrooms are sub-par in terms of safety, sanitation (lack of soap, toilet tissues, and damaged toilets) and recently there has been a lock down of bathrooms.
Adult restrooms are regulated through OSHA mandates, the children need the same federal protection.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Daisy Lee Myers, RN., BS
PS- Hand Middle School will be reopening their restrooms this week according to recent news article.

Hand principal plans to unlock bathrooms Vandalism a problem at city middle school
By Paula Holzman
pholzman@lnpnews.com
Intelligencer Journal
Published: Aug 30, 2004 11:40 AM EST
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - Most, if not all, of the bathrooms at Lancaster city's Hand Middle School will be unlocked for the first day of school on Wednesday. A rash of vandalism prompted School District of Lancaster officials in April to lock bathrooms except during lunch periods. The move drew fire from parents upset that their children had to wait long periods before someone could unlock the bathroom door. A new principal with a new outlook, however, has changed that. "My experience with kids is that they will live up or down to expectations," Larry Mays, the school's new principal, said Sunday. "(Students) need to be given the opportunity to live up to expectations."
Mays replaces former principal Sophia Carter, who instituted the locked-door policy and resigned at the end of the previous school year. This year, all bathrooms on the floors with regular classrooms will be open, although students will be required to obtain a hall pass from their teacher, Mays said.
He is unsure about how to treat bathrooms on the school's lower level, which houses the cafeteria and specialty classrooms. Bathrooms on that level will be unlocked during lunch periods, but Mays is weighing keeping the bathrooms locked during the first two and last two periods. Students having class on that floor would go to the first floor to use bathrooms during locked hours.
Mays plans to speak with students during the first week about basement bathrooms.
Restoring the vandalized bathrooms was a costly investment: The district spent $150,000 on bathroom repairs that included replacing battered stall doors, kicked-in pipes and torn-out sinks. Mays said he understands the extent of the damage but believes he can trust most students to respect the bathrooms as they would their own property. "Students need to be treated with respect and dignity," he said. Mays believes that only a handful of students committed the vandalism and said the fact that the bathrooms are free of graffiti illustrates that most students are trustworthy.
"I don't think I have bad kids in this building," he said. Damage to the bathrooms would need to become "mighty extreme" for Mays to go back to a lock down, he said.
The move to open bathrooms also is part of Mays' overall goal of improving communication between the school and students, parents and the business community.
To that end, the school plans to have monthly parent coffees, held in the morning and evening, and host a back-to-school potluck dinner Sept. 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

One day, we may have to decide if we want microchips implanted in our brains. The technology advances steadily. We can now put a microchip in a rat's brain, and control the movements of the rat with a radio transmitter. A monkey with a microchip in its brain can move a mechanical arm to get a drink of water just by thinking about it.
Such technology could prove helpful for those who face barriers to sight and hearing and movement, but it could prove dangerous to those who do not. A person with a microchip in the brain becomes vulnerable to thought control by others.
If anyone could make money by controlling us through microchips in our brains, someone will find a way to control us.
I fear the day when it becomes routine for children to have microchips implanted in their brains. They will grow up as robots, and never know that they were born as individuals with free will.
I posted information and links about this at my web site.

Had a meeting with a teacher and administration just this morning over denied restroom use. My 17 year old was forced to leave class without permission and was assigned detention as a result. This same teacher has also denied restroom use to a pregnant teen in the same class and then lied to administration about doing it. As hard as I tried I couldn't get her to understand that she could not deny these students their basic human rights. Icing on the cake was she had let two students go before my daughter and then wouldn't let her go. If the girls are on their periods they have to come up front and whisper to the teacher and ask to go. She left the meeting threatening me with a lawyer.

As a mystery writer, I write a lot of things that may involve the cruelest things done to children but in real life, there is no excuse for why anything should be happening to the children.
My daughter had her recess taken away because she used the bathroom during class time. At first it used to be that she couldn't go unless the teacher thought it was an emergency.
I wrote a letter to the Governor, I got the media involved but it didn't go that far. I got a call from the administration saying that it was handled and that the school will have an unlocked doors policy and unlimited restroom use. The children with majorly excessive use of the bathroom would be dealt with. So far, so good.
Chain of command-
Teacher
Principle
Administration or District Office
Governing Board or Board Members
Sometimes you can even reach the Board of Education.
Best of luck,

I posted earlier about a teacher taping a student's mouth shut. Actually, over a period of three days, multiple children had their mouths taped, but the principal found that the teacher actually had the children tape their own mouths shut, and the district spokesperson told me that "it was not a discipline method". What a bunch of #*#*@*!
We live in a "Pollyanna" world here, where it seems best to lie about what is going on, than to address the problems.
As far as bathroom use, our teachers dole the passes out. We even have had teachers add points to a student's average at the end of the semester for left over passes. Imagine, inflating a grade for NOT going to the bathroom. I see no relation between academic achievement and the ability to hold bodily waste. As a parent and RN, I am appalled.
I am the mouthpiece for my community and am speaking before the Board of Ed to ask for corporal punishment to be abolished in our county and State. No wonder our District is not shocked at mouths taped, or teachers sticking hands down kid's pants to enforce a tuck in policy. They rule with a power that is frightening, and no one is stopping them....yet! Wish me luck....

My 16 year old dd just brought home a "behavior" sheet from one teacher in her High School for the parents and child to sign.
One of the "rules" is that only a small number passes to the rest room will be issued during the year. If the child needs to use the toilet after that, they will get a detention.
I sent a letter to the teacher, the Dean and the Nurse about this most Barbaric practice.
I suffered through urinary problems and surgery brought on by forced retention during public school in the 60s and I will not allow the same thing to happen to my child.
I will take this to the school board, the County or even my own lawyer if the "rule" is not changed immediately.
CRUELTY towards children should not be allowed in our schools.
Thank you for this web site.

It has come to my attention that a teacher in our public elementary school has taped a child's mouth shut for talking in class. Our state and county does have a legal corporal punishment policy, and our child protective services said that this does not meet the requirement for child abuse. Where does one go? This is not my child, but could be!

I'm a grandmother who never thought hitting children was good parenting, but I confess to having spanked my children on a few occasions over the years. I've become educated since then, and I've convinced my children that they should not use corporal punishment on my grandchildren. I've also educated myself in better, more effective methods of child rearing, and passed on the information to my children. Thank you so much for your efforts to inform and educate the public on this extremely important matter.

I am English, & was shocked to find this. At my primary school, some 40 years ago, we were discouraged from using the toilet, & to this day I can still feel the humiliation when i messed myself because i was frightened to ask. Another boy, Billy Page, i remember wet himself during assembly because he was so scared to ask to leave. I am disgusted to see this still happens. I wish you well in your fight.

A P,S. to my previous post. One of the requirements at our Middle School in NC {Weddington Middle School} is that all shorts that fall above the knee must be purchased from a vendor. It is not enough that the parents can read and follow the rules. The uniform vendor is required to "BARCODE" all shorts, actually imprinting a barcode on the rear pocket to prove that the shorts are "LEGAL". Given the fact that this administration has condoned a teacher putting her hands down the pants of unsuspecting students to enforce a "tuck in" policy, I am relieved that this barcode will be on the "OUTSIDE"
of the shorts, instead of the "INSIDE", being fair game for inspection. In all sincerity, I propose that all parents who do not wish for a teacher to put her hands down their child's pants be able to purchase a "BARCODE" to indicate this. Perhaps the school should receive the 3% kickback that it is getting from the vendor to endorse it's uniforms for the application of this barcode.
Forgive my sarcastic tone, but this is life as we know it at Weddington Middle School in North Carolina.
Thoughts? I would love feedback.

I am the founder of a public web site in Union County, North Carolina.
We have serious issues in our area, apathy on the District level, and a Middle School whose administration is non parent and student friendly.
My son was sexually assaulted on a school bus on school property when he was in the 8th grade. He ran off of the parked bus after being kicked in the testicles, and grabbed in the penis by a high school girl. The vice principal asked him why he had gotten of the bus, and he said, "I was sexually harasrabbed my penis." This administrator told him he could not talk that way, suspended him from the bus for two days, and removed him from the school broadcasting team. He was told that he could not be trusted with a microphone since he now had a history of "inappropriate language." A day of out of school suspension was added to the punishment when my son and I met with this vice principal to reiterate our story. The girl was not called in for questioning for three weeks, we were not allowed to present witnesses to the event. I went to the District asking for a Title IX coordinator to assist us, as this was our legal right. The assistant superintendent of schools did not know what a Title IX coordinator was, yet he told the Office of Civil Rights, {later in the year when I filed a grievance}that he had offered his services to me as the Title IX coordinator and that I refused.
Hundreds of parents have had issues with this administration. I don't know why the District protects this type of behavior.
We also have a dress code in our school, voted in by the parents. This should be a no brainer, but has resulted in a huge amount of suspensions. Teachers stand guard in the hall with clipboards to write children up for small or imaginary infractions. The most disturbing thing is that there is actually a teacher who pulls children's sweatshirts up to check underneath for infractions, once exposing a girl's undergarments in the hall. One rule we have is that shirts must stay tucked in at all times. This same teacher has been known to sneak up behind unsuspecting children who are bent over at a locker, and whose shirt is tucked in, yet pulling a bit due to bending over. This teacher actually puts her hands down these children's pants to stretch the shirt down. Many parents have filed reports, but the behavior continued all year. Reports to the principal have been documented since 2002.
This administration has ignored pleas for help from a child who was getting instant messages from a bus driver that were sexual in nature, did not react to a student asking for help when she got an instant message from another student threatening to bring a gun to school to kill her, yet this administration acts out of proportion to minor events. One episode involved a boy and girl who leaned over at the same time to pick up a pencil, and the girl's hair swung in the boy's face by accident. He growled playfully at her, and was charged with "sexual harassment" by the school, and faced a lengthy out of school suspension. The girl and her family did not cause this, the school did. How can a child be deemed guilty of this, while another child is actively assaulting the genitals of a student, and is not questioned? It is mind boggling.
There is another web site that I as a parent recommend, it is www.greatschools.net.
You can post a review of your school and rate the school on several categories. Feel free to see what the parents of Weddington Middle School in NC are saying. We simply cannot break through the layers of red tape in the system to effect positive change.
Thank you for all you do for children!

Dear Child Advocate
Please write a letter to the Pennsylvania House and Senate Education Committees supporting a State level regulation they are considering to ban beating children in PA public schools. Pennsylvania is the only one of the Northeast states to beat children in its schools. During the 2000 school year, 380 youth of all ages were reported beaten in Pennsylvania public schools, mostly in the southwest corner of the state . The Office of Civil Rights projects that number to actually be 407. It is unacceptable to the citizens of Pennsylvania and the vast majority oppose hitting children in schools. Many are unaware it still exists. The vast majority of school districts ban hitting children. Catholic schools abolished hitting children across America,
The United Nations Convention Rights of the Child denounce hitting children and all European nations (beginning with Poland, Austria, and the Soviet Union) banned hitting children in schools. The U.S. Congress recognized in 1866 that corporal punishment is "barbarous in character and degrading in influence." (http://nospank.net/sr153.htm) and its laws do not allow prisoners, slaves, and women to be assaulted in its institutions. It is our duty to uncompromisingly fight corporal punishment in all its institutionalized forms!
Although some Pennsylvania citizens wrote letters,
Senator Schwartz's legislative aide Michael Shields said that organizations' support was lacking. He recommended that
major organizations, like UNICEF, for example, that would like a ban on assaulting children in schools write letters- or individuals from those organizations who are personally opposed to hitting children in school- write letters on the organization's letterhead.
So please write a letter against hitting children in schools. Also please say that Pennsylvania should abolish beatings in private schools like New Jersey has done.
Please send a letter supporting the regulation to:
Pennsylvania House Education Committee
Chair Honorable Jess M. Stairs
East Wing Room 43A
Harrisburg, PA 17120-2020
Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee
Chair Hon. James J. Rhoades
Senate Box 203029
Harrisburg, PA 17120-3029
Vice Chair Allyson Y. Schwartz
Senate Box 203004
Harrisburg, PA 17120-3004
But the regulation is only part of a larger amendment to the student civil rights code, and it is not even clear if the amendment will pass. But Pennsylvania citizens are strongly against hitting children in school so now is the time to act and legislate!!
Please say what I should do? Do you know of any specific major organizations you believe would be willing to write a letter? Or maybe you know someone in an organization like the ACLU who you can get to get their organization to write a letter?
Please stop beating children in school!
yours respectfully,
Hal Smith

ref: school children denied toilet breaks
dear parents:
take your complaints one step further and file a complaint with the US DEPT OF EDUCATION IN YOUR REGION.
just give them the facts including:
child's name
school the chid attends
bathroom complaints
any school policies
that allowed the bathrooms to be locked down. THIS IS WRONG.
INFUSE THE HIPAA LAW TO. THE MEDICAL PRIVACY ACT FOR ALL ILL CHILDREN.
finally, ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
COMPLAIN TODAY!
DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE CHILD DEVELPOS KIDNEY PROBLEMS RELATED TO DELAY ELIMINATIONS.
thanks

Hello, I came across your web site while looking for info on bowel retention for my 3 yr old daughter. I was appalled by the letters of children not being able to use the restroom when they need to. I was not aware this was happening and will make sure it is addressed when my girls go to school. Thank you. Valerie Grant

Thank you, Laurie, for all you are doing for children!
Here is a good petition to sign, against a ghastly torture device that is being sold in the US for the sole purpose of beating babies and children: http://www.parentinginjesusfootsteps.org/petition-2.html

Thank you for looking out for our children. In my opinion, today we are sending out "mixed" messages to our children about the use of drugs. Too many kids are using ADD/ADHD drugs and then we teach them not to use drugs. I am confused!!

Thank you for the excellent work you are doing to protect children, to help people recognize the violence that is a part of so many children's daily lives for the destructive and wounding force that it is. It is a way for some people, who are acting out their own original woundedness, to take it out on whoever is available and vulnerable-their innocent little ones. And in this way, they will never be aware of their own small, vulnerable, precious child self who was confused and terrified by a parent who deliberately hurt them. How can any child stand to know the person they love and trust hurts them? So they block off this wound, and then pass it on to their own children.
I hope this cycle of pain and violence will stop, and bringing it to light for what it is will help to stop it.

I do not agree with much of the information available on this site. As a current attendee of public schools, with four younger siblings also on their way through public schooling, I recognize that your criticisms of most public schools are biased, unfairly presented, or outright false. I would suggest that do some fact-checking, and not take the worst examples as standard practice.
Response from ChildAdvocate.org:
Thank you for your comments about the web site. I am glad to hear that you attend a public school system that appears to run contrary to the issues addressed on my web site. As a professional who has worked with 100's of young people and who has visited, worked in numerous public schools and has heard testimonies about public schools all over the country, I have to disagree with you that the information on my web site is inaccurate. It is based on fact and standard public school practice. As a professional, I would never publish information on my web site that was unfactual. Unfortunately, most young people are very dissatisfied with many aspects of public schooling, especially the fact that they do not have the right to direct their own curriculum, time, learning and even bodily functions. I invite you to read "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" by Grace Llywellen to get a perspective on education that isn't regimented and controlled by adult agendas. -L.A.C.

I am so glad to have found this site. I have a 4 yr old granddaughter and a 10 yr old step granddaughter. It is so important for people to know that children have rights, and they need to
be taken seriously.

This is a great site. Great Resouces. I am totally opposed to all corporal punishment and other punitive measures against children as I was abused. About 6 months ago I discovered through a Spank/Not to spank Debate board on AOL, positive discipline principles and heard from people who had tremendous successes with it and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who I can tell about it. I tremendously appreciate people who advocate for kinder, gentler ways of dealing with children. I only wish my parents had known about it back in the 60s.

This is a wonderful site for those of us who are prepared to go to battle to protect our children from maltreatment and abuse, especially in school settings.

Keep up the good work Laurie. We need more people like you to help protect our "little ones". They can't protect themselves. They rely on us. It's every adults responsibility to keep children safe...

If it wasn't for a person who knew about this page I would have gone along with all the other jr. high kids at my school and not be able to go to the restroom when really needed. I will use this web site forever.

At last, a web site that actually truly cares about kids. About time we looked after our future generation. I mean, if adults wont look after, protect and believe in them then who the hell will?

Laurie, I'm impressed with the passion and effort you've poured into this web site. You have great articles on a variety of issues that need voicing and addressing, concerning children and the abuse they face from the "education" system, and "the system" in general. Great web site! I enjoyed reading your writings. Keep up the good work.

Hi Laurie - I signed here some time ago (#74) but since then have a web site where can be found my entire book, "Parenting Without Punishing". Also there is the STEP UP RESOLUTION for signing on by those prepared to intervene when adults commit violence against a child. Since January, 2002, over 220 conscientious and courageous people have "stepped up" to sign on with me, all listed on the site. You know I support all the vital work you are doing, and all working together we'll defeat the beast Corporal Punishment. - Norm Lee

You should update your page now. I am canadian, and in regard to the section 43 of our criminal code, our supreme court has just recently said they will not get rid of that law and parents still have the right to spank their kids (while setting down what they called restrictions on it). This is a sad sad day for children in Canada. They can still be spanked. Why should children and animals be second class citizens? This is horrible.

Although I am from Canada, I have to say that you are a wonderful person for what you do. I believe that the world together would benefit if we all made a paradigm shift. Children need to be treated the way we want to be treated. They are people too.

I am from The Netherlands. I am a victim and survivor of severe child abuse. I have been working very hard in order to overcome the devastating impact it has had on my life and that of my children. I use your web site as a resource for myself and my children. Knowing that there are people like you that deeply care about children and their rights helps me tremendously.

American children urgently need their country's adults to be converted to Laurie's views. The USA has the worst rates of corporal punishment in the industrialised world both at home and in school, and for many years has been the only rich country whose schools still practice this. This is a beautiful web site, and Laurie is doing such good for children. I urge all readers to tell their friends about this site.

I am pleased to find that more and more people are willing to fight for our rights. As a child i felt it my responsibility to research corporal punishment. Corporal punishment in all of its forms is wrong. I just wish that more people could recognize that fact. Corporal punishment is wrong. endcpnow@netscape.net
